 |
Land surface: 642 km2
Elevation: 1,494 m

Fernandina is just over a 100,000 years old and is the youngest of the archipelago. The island has an impressive volcano, one of the most active on the planet. Even though it is the youngest in the Galapagos, at least 12 eruptions have been recorded in the last 150 year. The caldera is 6 km wide, with a deep of 900 mt.
The vegetation on the slopes of Fernandina belongs to the arid zone. At an elevation of 1,200 mt, the flora is reduced to islets of fens, surrounded by lava flows. On the top of the volcano, high grasses and scalesia bushes are dominant.
The visitors sites are: Punta espinosa.
